The 2026 general elections are shaping up to be one of the most closely watched contests in Rubanda District, particularly for the Rubanda West County Member of Parliament seat. With Four candidates officially nominated, the race reflects not only political diversity but also a growing demand for leadership that resonates with the daily realities of ordinary citizens.
The contenders, incumbent Hon. Moses Kamuntu Mwongyera running as an independent, NRM Flag Bearer Bruce Baraba Kabaasa, Genesis Akampurira and Sabiiti Ambrose also independent candidates, each bring distinct visions, together painting a vivid picture of Rubanda West’s evolving political landscape.
Their nominations were confirmed last month by Rubanda District Electoral Commission Registrar, Medard Nteziyaremya.
Hon. Moses Kamuntu Mwongyera, the current MP, recently participated in the NRM party primaries but lost to Bruce Baraba Kabaasa. Undeterred, he is now determined to reclaim his seat as an independent candidate.
Kamuntu emphasizes his unwavering commitment to serving his constituents, irrespective of political affiliation.
He highlights his role in the establishment of an integrated steel and cement plant in Muko Sub-county, noting that Rubanda’s mineral wealth positions it as a potential hub for industrial development.
Kamuntu pledges to prioritize healthcare improvements, job creation, education, and road infrastructure upgrades if re-elected.
He has also taken a firm stance on protecting the rights of farmers who cultivate wetlands, pointing out that many residents rely on them for their livelihoods.
“People in Rubanda survive on small-scale farming, including wetlands. My goal is to ensure that environmental conservation efforts go hand in hand with people’s survival,” he says.
NRM Flag Bearer Bruce Baraba Kabaasa brings a different focus to the race, emphasizing education, poverty eradication, and enhanced service delivery.
He champions the strengthening of primary education through school feeding programs and pledges to upgrade healthcare and sanitation across Rubanda West.
Kabaasa also vows to empower local communities, particularly through support for women’s groups and effective implementation of government programs like the Parish Development Model (PDM).
“I am confident that the people of Rubanda West know my record of service delivery. I have already demonstrated my commitment through several community initiatives, and I am ready to do even more,” he says, expressing optimism about a victory in the upcoming elections.
Sabiiti Ambrose, the newest entrant in the race, proposes a vision built on four pillars: promoting household income, boosting youth talent and empowerment, improving education, and strengthening health services.
“Through these pillars, I seek to build a constituency where every family is empowered, every youth has a chance to shine, every child can access quality education, and every person can live a healthy and dignified life. I am ready to serve with honesty, humility, and action,” he says.
What emerges from this contest is not just a fight for political office, but a reflection of Rubanda West’s desire for leaders who understand the daily struggles of its people and are willing to deliver tangible solutions.
Voters are now faced with a choice between experience, established service, and fresh perspectives, each promising a path to progress.
