- Majambere had been remanded by the Gomba Magistrates’ Court until December 3, 2024.
GOMBA: The Rukiga District Deputy Resident District Commissioner (DRDC), Ivan Kamuntu Ssemakula Majambere, has been released on bail after being remanded on charges related to land grabbing.
Majambere was remanded by the Gomba Magistrates’ Court until December 3, 2024. He is facing charges of Conspiracy to Defraud, Stealing Cattle, and Criminal Trespass. The accusations stem from allegations that Majambere, along with other individuals still at large, forcibly took possession of land in Gomba District.
In August 2023, Majambere and his accomplices allegedly seized approximately 300 acres (Block 75, Plot 2) of farmland in Gomba District owned by 75-year-old Frank Rushanganwa. The elderly landowner has held a certificate of title for the property since 2003.
During the alleged land seizure, Majambere and his associates reportedly stole 157 cows, valued at UGX 318 million, and transported them to an undisclosed location. Majambere claims to have purchased part of the disputed land in 2020 from his co-accused, Amos Mwesigye, who himself alleges to have bought the entire property in 2018. However, Mwesigye has failed to provide evidence supporting his claims.
To consolidate their alleged illegal occupation, Majambere and Mwesigye reportedly sold portions of the land to unsuspecting buyers. In March 2024, a court issued an eviction order against Mwesigye. Despite this, Majambere and his associates allegedly continued to threaten the legitimate owner, prompting the State House Anti-Corruption Unit (SHACU) to intervene, leading to Majambere’s arrest.
On Thursday, Majambere announced his release on bail through a post on X (formerly Twitter), without disclosing the terms of his bail. He maintained his innocence, claiming the charges were fabricated and expressing confidence in his legal team and President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni’s leadership to ensure justice.
“Dear Ugandans, you heard a lot about a leader. They accused me falsely, but my legal team did a good job. I have temporary freedom now, but I know that as long as H.E. Kaguta Museveni is President, I will get justice,” he wrote.
Majambere criticized what he described as malicious attempts to tarnish his reputation and derail his future political aspirations.
“I am overwhelmed with gratitude and joy as I walk out of prison on bail after self-seekers slapped false charges of land grabbing, fueled by malicious intentions. This experience has only strengthened my resolve to serve the community with integrity and transparency,” he stated.
He also thanked God for providing strength and guidance during his ordeal and vowed to continue advocating for justice.
