Rukiga District Council has approved a budget of Shs 28,207,837,000 Billion for the financial year 2025/2026.
The budget estimates were presented by the District Vice Chairperson and Leader of Government Business, Jackline Nkamushaba, on behalf of the District Chairperson, Robert Mbabazi Kakwerere, during a council session chaired by District Speaker Oscar Akampurira on Wednesday. The budget highlights several key development priorities aimed at improving service delivery and infrastructure within the district.
In the same session, the council approved the appointment of Amedi Benda, Councilor representing Mparo Town Council, as the District Representative to Kihanga Secondary School, located in Mparo, Rukiga District.
Additionally, the council unanimously approved a UGX 30,000 increment in transport allowances for councilors, raising the amount from UGX 150,000 to UGX 180,000.
While chairing the session, Speaker Akampurira urged councilors to actively participate in sensitizing the community about the ongoing mass National Identity Card registration exercise. He emphasized the importance of community involvement, particularly encouraging the elderly to correctly declare their dates of birth to ensure eligibility for the Senior Citizens Grant (SEGE), a government welfare program aimed at supporting older persons.
On a separate note, District Chairperson Robert Mbabazi Kakwerere raised concerns about the growing issue of land grabbing in the district. He warned that such practices hinder development efforts and cited a current dispute involving the Kibahigire family, who are allegedly attempting to evict residents from contested land.
