The Rukiga District LC5 National Resistance Movement (NRM) party flag bearer, Simon Mutebi Rwamagyenda, has stirred debate after outlining hardline proposals he says he would implement if elected in the 2026 general elections.
Speaking on Sunday at a campaign rally held at Kyerero Parish in Bukinda Sub- County, Rwamagyenda said government jobs in Rukiga District should be reserved exclusively for residents of the district. He added that applicants from neighboring districts, including Rukungiri and the wider Ankole sub-region, should instead seek employment opportunities in their home areas.
Rwamagyenda argued that prioritizing locals for government positions would enhance employment opportunities for the “sons and daughters of Rukiga” and promote local development.
He also announced plans to regulate the operation of bars and entertainment establishments across the district. According to Rwamagyenda, if elected, bars would be required to remain closed during morning hours and only open from 2:00 p.m. onwards.
He said the move is intended to discourage early-morning alcohol consumption and encourage residents to focus on productive work and development activities.
