RUKIGA: The Rukiga District Woman MP, Hon. Kamusiime Caroline Muhwezi, has raised concerns about the stigma faced by People With Disabilities (PWDs) both within families and when accessing government services.
While donating 20 wheelchairs valued at 10 Million to PWDs in Rwamucucu Sub County, Rukiga District yesterday, Hon. Kamusiime expressed dismay over the isolation experienced by PWDs. She noted that some parents are reluctant to allow their children with disabilities to interact with others in the community, including at educational centers, health facilities, and churches.

Kamusiime emphasized the importance of inclusion and denounced the exclusion of PWDs from various aspects of community life. She highlighted that before the wheelchair donations, many parents kept their children with disabilities away from social activities and public spaces.

In response to the dire situation faced by PWDs, caretakers like Kiiza Harriet, Safari Baker (son of James Kiiza, who suffered a stroke), Beyanga Edison, and Natukunda Beyanga expressed gratitude for the wheelchair donations. They explained how carrying PWDs during adverse weather conditions posed significant challenges and praised the initiative for alleviating their burden.
They anticipated that with the wheelchairs, PWDs would now be able to participate in community activities such as attending church services, visiting health centers, and accessing markets.

Local leaders also weighed in on the issue, with Eddie Mugisha, the LC3 Chairman of Rwamucucu Sub County, highlighting the struggles faced by PWDs, especially during inclement weather. He emphasized the need for practical solutions to improve their mobility and well-being.

The event concluded with a renewed commitment to promoting inclusivity and providing necessary support to ensure the well-being and integration of PWDs into society.
