The Rukungiri Municipality Member of Parliament aspirant Andrew Ankunda Kikira has rejected the results of the recent National Resistance Movement (NRM) primaries, citing widespread bribery, voter intimidation, and procedural irregularities.
According to results released by the Rukungiri NRM Electoral Commission, Gen. Henry Tumukunde won the race with 4,517 votes (45.6%), followed by incumbent MP Dr. Elisa Rutahigwa with 2,843 votes (28.7%). Other contenders included Isaac Atukunda (1,658 votes – 16.7%), Andrew Ankunda Kikira (736 votes – 7.4%), Nathan Kamugisha Akandwanaho (101 votes – 1.0%), and Kabano Apollo (49 votes – 0.5%).
While addressing journalists at his home in Rwakabengo Ward, Southern Division, on Sunday, Kikira expressed strong dissatisfaction with the conduct of the primaries held on July 17, 2025.
“I cannot support a candidate who emerged from a process marred by open bribery and voter intimidation,” Kikira stated. “Some of my supporters were coerced and bribed, making the outcome unacceptable.”
Kikira, along with five other defeated candidates, condemned the electoral process, describing it as rushed and plagued by procedural flaws. He cited incidents where voting extended as late as 4:00 PM at some polling stations, in violation of the NRM’s electoral guidelines.
“This was more of a fast-tracked election than a structured party process. The irregularities raise serious concerns about the credibility and legitimacy of the outcome,” he added.
Despite the loss, Kikira said his mobilization teams remain active on the ground, continuing voter engagement and gauging public sentiment. While he did not confirm plans to run as an independent in the 2026 general elections, he hinted at the possibility after consulting with his political networks.
“I thank the people of Rukungiri for their participation and express deep gratitude to my coordinators, supporters, and well-wishers for their unwavering support,” Kikira concluded.
