KAMPALA: The Rukungiri Municipality Member of Parliament, Elisa Rutahigwa, has urged the government to expedite the distribution of relief items in his constituency following heavy rains that destroyed crops and left many residents without food.
During a Parliamentary session this week, Rutahigwa highlighted that the country has been experiencing unusually heavy rainfall, with Rukungiri Municipality being severely affected on September 10th. He explained that the downpour caused significant damage to crops in the Southern Division, particularly in the areas of Ndolero, Nyakibale, Kibirizi, and Nyaruzinga.
MP Rutahigwa emphasized that the destruction of crops has left many residents struggling to find food. He called on the Minister of Relief and Disaster Preparedness to accelerate the distribution of relief food.
He requested the provision of planting materials such as beans and cassava cuttings so that farmers could take advantage of the remaining rainy season for replanting.
In response, Lillian Aber, the Minister of State for Relief, acknowledged the concern and assured Parliament that the government would deliver food supplies to the affected communities as soon as they receive a report from the District Disaster Committee.
Regarding the request for planting materials, Aber committed to coordinating with the Ministry of Agriculture to facilitate their distribution if available.
