Rukungiri Police Nab Suspect Red-Handed in Electric Wire Theft Spree

Police in Rukungiri District have arrested a 27-year-old man, Wycliffe Amumpaire, a resident of Rwabuteneka Cell, Kagasha Ward in Eastern Division, over alleged vandalism and theft of electric wires.

According to ASP Maate Elly, the Kigezi Regional Police Spokesperson, the arrest was made on Friday, September 26, 2025, at around 11:00am after reports of continued acts of vandalism in the municipality.

UEDCL’s Rukungiri area manager, Alex Asiimwe, had earlier reported a series of incidents of electric wire thefts in Omukempeho Trading Center, Bunura, and other parts of Rukungiri Municipality since July.

On Friday morning, fresh vandalism was detected at Rwabuteneka Trading Center, prompting police and local leaders to mount surveillance in the area.

Amumpaire was reportedly spotted cutting the wires and was immediately apprehended by police officers. A search at his home led to the recovery of suspected stolen wires, which have been exhibited as evidence.

Police have since documented the crime scene, and inquiries are ongoing at Rukungiri Central Police Station.
