Seven suspects have reportedly escaped from lawful custody at Rubanda Police Station in Rubanda District.
The incident occurred on 22nd November 2025 at around 3:30pm at Rubanda Police Station in Murole “B” Cell, Rubanda Town Council.
The escapees have been identified as Akansasira Junior, Biryomumeisho Dismas, Kanyesigye Ivan, Turihohabwe Anthony, Tumuhimbise Emmanuel, Taremwa Aaron and Shabaruhanga Paulino, according to Kigezi Regional Police Spokesperson, ASP Elly Maate.
Maate explained that the incident happened when Police Constable (PC) Erou Naboth, the cell guard, opened the cells for one of the suspects, Turihohabwe Anthony, to speak to a relative who had come to check on him.
As the officer was escorting Turihohabwe back into the cells, another suspect, identified as Taremwa Aaron, allegedly pushed him, causing him to fall. In the confusion that followed, seven suspects escaped, leaving only one in custody.
According to Maate, three of the escapees were being held on a case file of simple robbery, three others on charges of theft, and one on charges of domestic violence.
He added that case files for the three suspects charged with simple robbery, as well as the file for the suspect still in custody on charges of injuring animals, had already been compiled and forwarded to the Resident State Attorney (RSA) Kabale for perusal and legal advice.
Maate further revealed that a case of aiding suspects to escape from lawful custody has been opened.
The police officer who allegedly aided the escape has been arrested, together with other officers who were reportedly absent from duty at the time of the incident.
“They have been separately charged with neglect of duty. Investigations are ongoing,” he said.
He appealed to members of the public to immediately inform the nearest police station or local leaders if any of the escapees are seen or sighted, so that they can be rearrested and charged accordingly.
