More than 5,000 residents, representing 2,662 households in Ntoroko District, now have access to clean and safe water following the commissioning of the Nyakatoke Gravity Flow Water System, a Shs. 1.2 billion project.
‎
‎The system was officially inaugurated yesterday in Nombe Sub-County by the State Minister for Local Government, Hon. Victoria Rusoke Businge.
‎
‎Minister Rusoke urged the community to safeguard government projects against vandalism, noting that damaging public facilities reflects a lack of patriotism.
‎
‎She emphasized that the sustainability of the water system will rely on residents’ sense of ownership and commitment to its maintenance.
‎
‎The gravity flow scheme, which spans over 30 kilometers, serves Nombe and Karugutu sub-counties.
‎
‎Representing the community, Karim Kule, Chairperson of the Water Board, pledged full community ownership of the facility.
‎
‎He highlighted the relief residents feel, noting that before the project, they were paying Shs. 1,000 per jerrycan of water during the dry season and often shared stagnant water with animals, exposing them to waterborne diseases.
