SOROTI: At least six members of the Pentecostal Assemblies of God were arrested on Monday for allegedly sabotaging government programs aimed at poverty alleviation in Tubur Sub-county, Dakabela County, Soroti District.
According to Soroti District Deputy RDC, Bakak Ronald, the arrested individuals include Ebwolu Moses (church pastor), Omolo Simon, Lookout Abraham, Anyaiti Julius, Abuko Sarah, and Apoloti Jenifer.
Bakak further revealed that four members of the Church of Christ from Katine Sub-county, Soroti District Edweru Joseph, Nyero Aidah, Eyima David, and Ebwolu Patrick are also under investigation for similar allegations related to obstructing government programs.
In his statement, Bakak expressed his concern over how some churches have openly resisted government initiatives, such as immunization campaigns, the Parish Development Model (PDM), and Emyooga projects, which are aimed at improving the welfare of the people.
“Everything the NRM government does is constitutional. It is illegal for any church to oppose government programs, and this will not be tolerated in Soroti District,” said Bakak.
He added that his office has discovered that various churches and religious groups in Soroti District have been discouraging their congregations from participating in government efforts like immunization drives, PDM, and Emyooga.

During a recent polio vaccination campaign, Bakak said they identified two churches actively mobilizing members and communities to abstain from the program.
He also recounted an instance where a family in Soroti District told officials that participating in the PDM program was prohibited by their religious beliefs and against biblical teachings.
Bakak vowed not to tolerate any churches in Soroti that undermine government efforts and contribute to poverty, contradicting the NRM manifesto’s goal of creating a middle-income economy.
