The Uganda Law Society (ULS) has reaffirmed its commitment to constitutionalism and the rule of law by formally calling on the Uganda Police Force to comply with a High Court ruling concerning the residence of National Unity Platform leader, Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu.

In a letter addressed to the Inspector General of Police, Abbas Byakagaba, the ULS urged the immediate withdrawal of police personnel deployed at Kyagulanyi’s home in Magere, Wakiso District.

The appeal follows a clear High Court decision in Miscellaneous Cause No. 16 of 2021, which declared the prolonged restriction of the opposition leader to his residence unlawful and a violation of his right to personal liberty.

The Law Society noted that the continued police presence has restricted access to essential supplies, including food and other basic necessities, affecting not only Kyagulanyi but also his family.

According to ULS, such restrictions run contrary to constitutional guarantees, including freedom of movement, personal liberty, and the right to an adequate standard of living.

ULS Vice President, Anthony Asiimwe, emphasized that the Uganda Police Force is duty-bound to operate within the confines of the law, respect court orders, and protect the rights and dignity of all citizens without discrimination.

“The strength of our democracy lies in respect for judicial decisions and adherence to constitutional principles,” the statement reads, underscoring the importance of institutional accountability in upholding public trust.

The Law Society expressed confidence that the Uganda Police Force will take urgent corrective action, comply fully with the High Court ruling, and reaffirm its commitment to legality, human rights, and the rule of law.
