KISORO: The Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) has initiated the compensation process for a 15-year-old boy who was severely injured by a baboon in Kisoro District.

The boy, whose name has been withheld, was admitted to Rubuguri Health Centre IV in critical condition last month after suffering severe injuries to his buttocks from baboon bites.

The incident occurred in Nyabaremura Cell, Rubuguri Town Council, near Bwindi Gorilla National Park, as the boy attempted to chase a troop of baboons out of his family’s sweet potato garden. He is the son of Tuwangye Duriyano, a resident of Nyabaremura Cell.

Tindyebwa explained that the UWA guidelines provide for compensation to anyone injured by wildlife from the national park. He also advised residents living near the park to avoid sending young children to guard their gardens, as they are at higher risk of animal attacks.
