MBARARA: The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Force (UPDF) Deputy Land Force Commander, Maj. Gen. Francis Takirwa, has emphasized the importance of continued collaboration between Uganda and Rwanda in addressing cross-border illegal activities.
He urged the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) and the Rwanda Defence Force (RDF) to maintain regular information sharing to enhance security and stability.
Speaking at the closure of a three-day proximity commanders’ meeting in Mbarara City on Saturday, Maj. Gen. Takirwa highlighted that this partnership reflects the commitment of both armies’ leadership and aligns with the guidance of their respective Commanders-in-Chief.
The meeting brought together UPDF and RDF personnel deployed along the Uganda-Rwanda border.
“From the colonial era, our people have crossed borders for various reasons, and a sense of brotherhood has long existed on both sides. We cannot deny them the ability to visit one another and engage in business. What we must do is regulate their movements, ensuring their security while implementing our Commanders-in-Chief’s vision,” he stated.
He further stressed that both nations benefit from strengthened security, as it fosters a safe environment for trade and social interactions.
“When people know their safety is assured, they can conduct business with confidence,” he added.
During the meeting, various strategies were outlined to reinforce the bond between the forces and local communities along the border, aiming to enhance cooperation and mutual trust.
