KABALE: As Uganda grapples with an intense heatwave, with temperatures soaring close to a record 40°C in some areas, women have been urged to take the lead in environmental protection campaigns to combat the effects of climate change.

The call was made on Thursday by Innocent Arinaitwe, an assistant lecturer in the Environment Department at Kabale University, during the launch of a new project aimed at strengthening smallholder farmers’ resilience to climate change. The project, titled “Strengthening Smallholder Farmer Resilience to Climate Change Through Joint Learning, Development, and Evaluation of Contextualized Solutions,” was officially introduced at Cephas Inn Hotel in Kabale Municipality.

Kabale University will spearhead the project in collaboration with Kigezi Women in Development (KWID) and other partners.

Florence Tumuheirwe, Team Leader at KWID, emphasized that the project aims to enhance the resilience of smallholder farmers in the Rwenzori and Kigezi highlands against climate change. She called on the public to embrace the initiative, noting that it will help address critical environmental challenges such as soil erosion, deforestation, declining water quality, and wetland degradation, issues exacerbated by climate change.
