KASESE: Youth in Kasese District have voiced their dissatisfaction with existing parenting practices and the implementation of policies designed to protect their rights.

Despite the government’s efforts to create supportive policies, many young people feel their rights are still being violated, particularly within schools and their local communities.

These concerns were highlighted on Wednesday during the commemoration of the Day of the African Child, organized by the Kasese District Local Government with support from various Civil Society Organizations.

The event, held under the theme “Education for All Children in Africa, The Time is Now,” took place at the Kasese District Multipurpose Social Hall in Nyamwamba Division of Kasese Municipality.

Mr. Alfat Mumbere, Speaker of the Uganda National Students’ Association (Kasese branch), criticized both parents and some government bodies for failing to fulfill their responsibilities in raising children with strong moral values. Mumbere pointed out that certain education policies aimed at improving school performance have not been effectively implemented, particularly in rural schools.

Ms. Joan Atholere, a Senior Four student at Munkunyu Secondary School in Kinyamaseke Town Council, noted that issues like defilement and child labor persist because many parents do not engage in meaningful conversations with their children. This lack of dialogue creates a significant disconnect between parents and their children, leaving them unaware of potential risks and negative influences.

In his address, Kasese Resident District Commissioner Lt. Joe Walusimbi, the Chief Guest, acknowledged the youth’s testimonies as a challenge to both parents and policymakers. He urged parents to support their children’s education and well-being regardless of gender or race. Walusimbi also cautioned the police against colluding with those who violate children’s rights.
