The Bwindi Mgahinga Conservation Trust (BMCT) has announced that, beginning next academic term, it will withdraw financial support from sponsored learners who consistently underperform in their studies.
The announcement was made during a sensitization meeting held at Mabuyemero SDC Primary School in Mupaka Town Council on Thursday. The meeting brought together 27 Batwa pupils currently benefiting from BMCT’s sponsorship program, along with their parents.
According to Apollo Kugonza, the Programs Officer at BMCT, the decision is intended to instill academic discipline and ensure that educational resources are directed toward students who demonstrate commitment and strong academic performance.
He revealed that the Trust had observed a growing trend of poor academic results among some sponsored pupils, prompting the need for stricter accountability.
Kugonza called on parents, school administrators and community leaders to take a more active role in supporting learners by offering close supervision and motivation.

Although BMCT has yet to define the exact academic performance standards required to maintain sponsorship, the Trust confirmed that evaluations will be conducted at the end of each term to determine eligibility.
The announcement has drawn mixed reactions from the community. While some residents praised the move as a way to promote academic excellence, others expressed concern about its impact on children who may struggle due to challenges beyond their control.
