KABALE: Mercy Twikiriize, the director of Hadassah Vocational Training School in Bugongi, Upper Northern Division, Kabale Municipality has emphasized the pivotal role of parental encouragement in fostering vocational skills among their children.

She believes that such skills not only promote self-reliance but also cultivate a mindset of entrepreneurship, steering individuals away from being mere job seekers to becoming creators of employment opportunities.

In an interview conducted yesterday at the Hadassah institute premises, Twikiriize underscored the inclusivity of vocational training, asserting that it is not confined by gender norms. She advocates for the equal participation of both boys and girls, asserting that by equipping them with practical skills, they can forge their own paths towards success and make meaningful contributions to community development.

Challenging outdated perceptions, Twikiriize noted that while vocational skills were historically associated with boys, modern times call for a shift in mindset. She stressed the importance of parents recognizing the potential of vocational training for all children, irrespective of gender, to foster self-sufficiency and contribute to societal progress.

Highlighting the versatility of vocational education, Twikiriize pointed out that it offers an alternative route for students who may not excel academically. By imparting skills such as carpentry, tailoring, plumbing, and electrical work, vocational training equips students with practical tools for employment or entrepreneurship. At Hadassah Vocational Training School, which accommodates around 100 students, each participant receives a sewing machine upon completion of their course.
