
OPED – Born in Ishasha Cell, Nyanga Parish, Nyanga Sub-county, Kanungu District, Niwabiine Seth Nkurunungi’s journey epitomizes the transformative power of determination and resilience.
From a modest background and facing financial constraints, Niwabiine triumphed over challenges by toiling in subsistence farming and undertaking luxury jobs to secure a quality education.
“Growing up with limited resources, I faced numerous challenges. However, my desire to break the barriers of my circumstances fueled my motivation to excel in my studies. Despite financial constraints, I managed to secure a good education through subsistence farming and doing luxury work to earn education,” Niwabiine explains.

His outstanding aptitude for learning and commitment to serving others earned him respect and admiration from both teachers and peers.
“Throughout my academic journey, I exhibited an exceptional aptitude for learning and a passion for serving others. My dedication and determination earned me the admiration and respect of my teachers and peers. Understanding the transformative power of education, I aspired to make a positive impact in my community and beyond,” Niwabiine shares.

Despite being a single orphan living with his mother, Niwabiine’s dedication to breaking barriers in education made him a role model. He advocates tirelessly for social equality and equal opportunities, aspiring to create a future where everyone has a chance to succeed, regardless of their background.
“My resilience and determination in the face of adversity made me a role model for many who have witnessed my journey. I tirelessly advocate for social equality and equal opportunities for all, working towards a future where everyone has a chance to succeed, irrespective of their background,” Niwabiine emphasizes.

Niwabiine reflects, “Joining Bishop Barham University College in 2021 marked a new chapter in my life. As a class coordinator for the Faculty of Agricultural Science and Entrepreneurship, minister of ethics and integrity, now to Guild President. Ebenezer.”
In a significant achievement, on November 11, 2023, Niwabiine, a third-year student pursuing a Bachelor of Agricultural Science and Entrepreneurship at Bishop Barham University College in Kabale, was elected as the Guild President. He defeated celebrated comedian Nahabwe Samuel “Wenyine” with a margin of 67 votes.

Niwabiine garnered 320 votes, triumphing over Nahabwe, who received 253 votes.
Attributing his victory to students’ active involvement in the democratic process, Niwabiine expresses gratitude, “I want to extend my thanks to each and every one of you who took the time to participate in the electoral process and cast your vote. It is your active involvement and belief in the democratic process that makes our university community strong and vibrant.”
Niwabiine is committed to fostering unity, promoting student welfare, and enhancing the overall academic experience during his tenure.
“I am aware of the responsibilities that come with this role, and I assure you that I will work tirelessly alongside my fellow guild members to address your concerns, advocate for your needs, and strive towards creating a positive and inclusive campus environment. My goals are to foster a sense of unity, promote student welfare, and enhance the overall academic experience during our time at Bishop Barham University,” Niwabiine states.

He adds, “I firmly believe that a successful student government can only be achieved through collaboration and open communication with all of you. Your ideas and feedback will be valuable in shaping the initiatives we undertake and the policies we advocate for. I encourage each and every one of you to reach out to me or any member of the guild with your thoughts, suggestions, and concerns. Together, we can make a real difference and build a stronger community.”
Remaining grounded and humble, Niwabiine acknowledges his roots and the support that propelled him to his current position. His life story serves as an inspiration, reminding others that with determination, hard work, and a compassionate spirit, one can make a significant impact on the lives of others.
