Kabale University School of Medicine Guild Representative Council (GRC BNS/KAN) member, Elia Nabasa, has been elected the 10th University Guild Speaker following a closely contested re-vote held on Thursday, April 9, 2026, at Jophan Hostel in Makanga.
Nabasa secured victory with 22 votes, defeating his opponent, Atugabirwe Arnold Kato, who garnered 14 votes, an 8-vote margin that sealed his leadership of the 10th Guild Government.
The election process initially saw Hon. Atugabirwe declared winner with 19 votes against Nabasa’s 17 through a secret ballot. However, the results were contested by several Guild Representative Council (GRC) members, who raised concerns over the voting method.
They argued that the outgoing 9th Guild Speaker, Simon Rukuncha, had unilaterally imposed the secret ballot system without consulting members, contrary to established procedures.
Following the dispute, the matter was referred to the Dean of Students, Amos Tukamushaba, who intervened and guided the council toward a resolution. Members agreed to first vote on the preferred method for electing the Speaker, either by secret ballot or by a show of hands.
In that vote, 20 members supported voting by show of hands, while 16 preferred the secret ballot. Respecting the majority decision, the council proceeded with a re-vote using the show-of-hands method, ultimately resulting in Nabasa’s victory.
In his acceptance remarks, Nabasa expressed gratitude to all members for their support and pledged to foster unity and cooperation within the Guild Government.
He emphasized his commitment to impartial leadership and called on both supporters and opponents to work together for the success of the 10th Guild.
“I will serve all members equally and ensure we build a strong and united Guild Government,” Nabasa said.
The swearing-in ceremony for the 10th Guild Government is scheduled for Friday, April 10, 2026, at Kikungiri Hall starting at 2:00 PM.
Meanwhile, Justus Drake Kyarikunda, who was elected Guild President on March 21, 2026, will officially assume office alongside his leadership team.
Kyarikunda won the presidency with 1,209 votes, defeating his closest rival, Anxious Niwamanya, who received 1,038 votes.
Osbert Akandwanaho finished third with 773 votes, while Joshua Munezero came fourth with 42 votes.
Kyarikunda succeeds the 9th Guild President, Mukamawenka Edwine, ushering in a new chapter of student leadership at Kabale University.
