Kabale University Students Protest over Soaring Surcharge Fee

KABALE – Students at Kabale University have today boycotted both online and physical lectures, seeking clarification from university authorities regarding the sudden increase in surcharges from 30,000 to 80,000 Ugandan shillings.

Kabale University attained public university status in 2015. In response, the Uganda police intervened to prevent the planned demonstration.

Students were seen scattered across the university premises, donning their gowns, as a visible expression of discontent. According to students at Kabale University, today marks their decision to strike, protesting against the recent surcharge increment imposed by the university administration. They claim that the surcharge, which surged from 30,000 to 80,000 shillings, has been a persistent issue without any justification.

The students argue that despite being a public university with relatively high fees, they receive services of subpar quality. Expressing their frustration, they demand that the university administration actively seeks solutions to alleviate the burden of surcharges.

In response to the unrest, Tukamushaba Amos, the Dean of Students at Kabale University, acknowledges the validity of the students’ concerns. He assures them that these issues are understandable and can be addressed. Tukamushaba points out that sometimes faults in the system contribute to such problems. Additionally, he pledges his availability for students to reach out to him if they encounter any issues.

Tukamushaba proposes a potential solution, stating that if surcharges were exceptionally high in the previous semester, there could be a reduction in the upcoming semester.
