A 14-year-old pupil has been found dead in River Mpondwe in Kasese District, with police saying he was strangled before his body was dumped in the water.
The deceased, identified as Mbusa Michael, was a pupil at Nyakahya Primary School and a resident of Kyambogho Cell in Mpondwe-Lhubiriha Town Council.
According to police, Mbusa was allegedly murdered on Monday at an unknown time by unknown assailants.
Rwenzori East Region police spokesperson Elly Maate said the boy had been staying with his brother-in-law, Masereka Deogracious, in Kyambogho Cell.
Police said Mbusa disappeared from home at about 6pm on Monday, prompting his relatives to search for him without success.
“Information was conveyed to police about a floating body of an unidentified person in River Mpondwe,” Maate said in a statement on Tuesday.
The body was retrieved from the river and taken to Bwera Mortuary for a postmortem examination.
Police said the postmortem established that the deceased had been strangled before his body was thrown into the water.
The scene was visited, examined and documented as part of the ongoing investigations.
Maate said inquiries were ongoing and police were making efforts to identify and arrest those responsible for the boy’s death.
The incident has raised concern among residents in the area as police continue with investigations into the circumstances surrounding the killing.
