Kyambogo University has officially dismissed Guild President Benjamin Akiso for breaching the peace, mounting roadblocks, and insubordination to university authorities.

In a letter signed by Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Eli Katunguka Rwakishaya on Thursday, the university cited multiple violations of student regulations. Akiso was dismissed with immediate effect for contravening Regulation 20(a) on breach of peace, Regulation 19(b) on mounting roadblocks, and Regulations 18 and 15(c) regarding insubordination, as outlined in the Kyambogo University Student Regulations of 2003, amended in 2016.

The university stated that its Students’ Affairs and Welfare Committee found Akiso guilty of the alleged misconduct following a formal hearing.

“At its 111th meeting held on June 27, 2025, the University Council considered a report from the Students’ Affairs and Welfare Committee, which recommended your dismissal in accordance with Regulation 37(m),” the letter read.

As a result, Akiso is barred from participating in any academic or extracurricular activities, using university facilities, or representing the students’ guild or university in any capacity.

However, the decision has drawn criticism from the National Unity Platform (NUP) President, Robert Ssentamu Kyagulanyi, who condemned the move.

“His crime? Leading fellow students in a peaceful protest against unfair tuition policies targeting students from poor families,” Kyagulanyi said in a statement. “Museveni and his enablers have captured public institutions and are determined to silence dissent. While we pursue legal redress, this situation reminds us of the urgent need to unite and fight this injustice.”

He praised Akiso for his resilience: “You committed no crime for standing up for justice and fairness. History will be kind to you.”
