RUKUNGIRI: There was joy and excitement as 120 students of the Rujumbura Institute of Business and Technology in Bugangari Sub-county sat for their first Directorate of Industrial Training (DIT) examinations since the institute’s inception in July 2024.
Most of these students were sponsored by the Minister of Security and Member of Parliament for Rujumbura County, Hon. Maj. Gen. Jim Muhwezi, as part of his initiative to equip young people with vocational skills. The courses offered included Bricklaying and Concrete Practice, Carpentry and Joinery, Hairdressing and Beauty Therapy, Tailoring and Garment Cutting, Welding and Fabrication, Electrical Engineering, and other practical disciplines.
The students have been undergoing intensive skills development training, with the institute’s proprietors emphasizing their mission to train job creators rather than job seekers.
In an interview with our reporter, Asaph Katushabe, the acting principal of the Rujumbura Institute of Business and Technology, expressed optimism about the students’ prospects.
“The students have been equipped with knowledge and skills that will enable them to be agents of change in their respective communities if they put into practice what they have learned,” Katushabe said.
According to Katushabe, the institute’s pioneer students are expected to perform well in the exams due to the dedication and hard work of their instructors. He urged parents to support the institute, highlighting its commitment to providing quality education and addressing the growing issue of unemployment in Uganda and across Africa.
The institute’s instructors also encouraged parents to enroll their children to acquire practical skills that will enable them to earn a living, rather than relying on traditional white-collar jobs that are becoming less lucrative.

Caroline Katushabe, one of the students who completed the DIT exams, praised the institute’s proprietors, led by Brian Akatwijuka, and Minister Jim Muhwezi for sponsoring her education. “Many of us wouldn’t have managed to pay the required fees or purchase the materials needed for practical work. We are deeply grateful and will mobilize more support for Hon. Muhwezi come 2026,” she said.
The success of these pioneer students marks a significant milestone for the Rujumbura Institute of Business and Technology, setting a foundation for the development of skilled professionals ready to tackle Uganda’s unemployment challenges.
