RUKUNGIRI: Among 8,432 people in Rukungiri, 114 have been discovered with HIV/AIDS this quarter, according to Agnes Kateeba, the Station Manager for The AIDS Support Organization (TASO) in Rukungiri District.
Kateeba states that all identified individuals are currently receiving treatment.
Speaking to our reporter at her office in Mukakabada Cell, Western Division in Rukungiri Municipality, Kateeba explained that TASO Rukungiri is currently providing care for 6,870 people. Of these, 4,496 are females (65%) and 2,374 are males (35%). Additionally, there are 517 children aged 0 to 24 years, making up 8% of their clients.
Kateeba highlighted that TASO has now embarked on offering Voluntary Male Circumcision, Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) medication taken before sex to prevent HIV, Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP) medication taken within 72 hours after a possible HIV exposure to prevent infection, and Cervical Cancer Screening for females.
However, she expressed concerns about some clients failing to receive medication on time, difficulties in tracking children under the care of guardians or relatives who move frequently, and reduced funding for HIV/AIDS programs in Uganda, which has affected their resources.
She urged the public, especially those caring for patients, to ensure that medications are taken on time and encouraged everyone to get tested for HIV to know their status.
