RUBANDA- The Police in Rubanda district have instituted investigations under which a 55 years old woman died after she allegedly took contaminated porridge.
Elly Maate, the Kigezi region police spokesperson has identified the deceased as Vastina Twakire a resident of Rwondo village, Shebeya parish, Hamurwa sub county in Rubanda district.
It’s alleged that on 25/03/2023 a group of about 30 women had a group meeting (Kibina) in the home of one Jesca Baremereirwe where they prepared a local sorghum drink commonly known as Obushera which they took at around 14:00hrs and after which they went to their homes.
According to Maate, during the night, they fell sick, vomited and had diarrhea, and in the following morning, many were rushed to Hamurwa health centre iv and among the patients was the deceased one Twakire Vastina.
Maate says that on 27/02/2023, her condition worsened and was transferred to Rugarama hospital in Kabale municipality, from where she died in the morning of 28/03/2023.
He added that after her death, police were notified by the area chairperson Hamurwa cell one James Mugabe and a team of officers visited the scene, body was taken for post-mortem at Kabale referral hospital mortuary and done by police surgeon and samples of internal body parts obtained for further testing at GAL and statements taken free other patients.
