KISORO: Expectant mothers at Kisoro Hospital in Kisoro District have leveled accusations against health workers, alleging solicitation of bribes prior to service delivery.

This practice has reportedly become widespread, depriving underprivileged mothers of the free services they are entitled to. According to these mothers, health workers demand sums ranging from 150,000 to 200,000 shillings before providing any assistance at the facility.

Speaking anonymously to our reporter, one mother expressed frustration, stating that health workers exploit the vulnerable situation of desperate mothers to extract money from them. Another mother recounted her experience of being asked to pay 150,000 shillings upon arrival at the facility, yet she was not issued a receipt.

She noted, however, that those who comply with such demands tend to receive preferential treatment from the medical staff. Many mothers, she added, are hesitant to voice their grievances for fear of retaliation from the health workers.

However, Angela Kakuze, the In-Charge of the Maternity Ward at Kisoro Hospital, refutes these allegations, dismissing them as unfounded. According to Kakuze, expectant mothers are only required to purchase essential drugs that are currently unavailable in the hospital’s stock.
