Mpox is a viral illness caused by the monkeypox virus, a member of the Orthopoxvirus genus. On Friday, August 2, 2024, the Ministry of Health confirmed two new cases of Mpox in Uganda.
Both cases were imported from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and detected in Kasese District. According to a statement from the Ministry of Health, the cases include a 37-year-old woman from Mpondwe-Lhubiriha Town Council, who is married to a Congolese man, and a 22-year-old Congolese woman from Bunyiswa II village, Bwera sub-county, Kasese District.
Addressing the press on Wednesday at his office in Kasese town, Zepher Mubingwa, the Kasese Deputy RDC in charge of Busongora County, explained that following the Ministry’s pronouncement, they have decided to establish an isolation and treatment center at Bwera Government General Hospital to prevent the disease from spreading further in the communities.
Mubingwa used the same platform to call upon residents to avoid physical contact and eating untested meat as preventive measures against the spread of Mpox.
