Mudslides Overwhelm Kisoro, Health Facility Closed.

KISORO: Local leaders in Nyarubuye Sub County and its vicinity have cried for the government’s intervention after the area has been lately hit hard by landslides that have claimed people’s lives, gardens and health facilities.

Heavy downpours have been witnessed in Kisoro district since the start of this month and it has caused tragedy in many areas of the district including the transport sector.

However, in Nyarubuye Sub County, over 10 houses have been washed away by landslides, crops damaged and its only HCIII was hit by mudslides last Sunday night, and the facility has since closed.

According to the area LC3 chairman, Ndiryariye Earnest Bucyokori, residents cannot receive any health service at Nyarubuye HC3 because most facilities and drugs were destroyed.

He asked residents to be utilizing HCIIs in the sub county for a while. He asked for the government’s intervention because his people are in a crisis as some locals have been also displaced, others died while famine outbreak is in the corner because crops have been damaged.

He also anticipated more criminal cases in the future resulting from land wrangles because demarcations have also been destroyed by landslides.

Ngendahimana Philip the Kirwa village LC1 Chairman where Nyarubuye HCIII is located says that his people are currently facing health, sanitation and food crisis due to landslides that have claimed 8 houses in his village.

He noted that all 22 villages in Nyarubuye Sub County and Rukundo town council have been scheduled to remove the mud covering part of the health center.

Meanwhile, residents that were found at the facility removing the mud said that their manpower is not enough to clear the facility quick enough to have health services resumed. They asked district leaders to find a quick alternative.
