KISORO: The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health in Uganda, Dr. Diana Atwine, has tasked the Kisoro Hospital administration to properly maintain the intensive care unit (ICU) ward to ensure better service delivery.
Dr. Atwine made this statement on Monday during her impromptu inspection of the ongoing construction of a 40-bed capacity isolation unit at Kisoro Hospital in Kisoro Municipality. The project, valued at 4.12 billion shillings, was launched in April this year by the State Minister for Defense and Veteran Affairs, Sarah Nyirabashitsi Mateke, and is being undertaken by Geses Uganda Limited.
During her visit, Dr. Atwine discovered that the hospital lacks an oxygen plant, which poses a significant challenge to medical workers attending to patients in critical condition. Currently, the hospital relies on oxygen concentrators and cylinders from Kabale Regional Referral Hospital and other sources to provide quality services to its patients.

Dr. Atwine emphasized that once the construction of the new ICU is completed and commissioned, it must be properly maintained. She urged the health workers to take ownership of the new ICU, noting that the ministry has previously encountered issues where newly equipped ICUs were later found to be in poor condition during inspections.
