Ugandans on Monday, August 10, will elect Local Council II (LC2) chairpersons in all 10,718 parishes across the country, marking the final phase of the 2026 administrative unit elections.
Julius Mucunguzi, the Head of Public Relations and Spokesperson for the Electoral Commission in Uganda, said the elections will be conducted through an electoral college comprising members of village committees within each parish.
“For example, if a parish has 10 villages, the electoral college will comprise members of the village committees from all the 10 villages who will meet at the parish headquarters to elect the chairperson,” Mucunguzi said.
The candidates were nominated earlier and have been conducting campaigns, which ended on Sunday, paving the way for Monday’s elections.
According to the Electoral Commission programme, members of the electoral college are expected to arrive at designated polling venues between 7am and 10am, where election officials will verify their details against the voters’ register.
Between 10am and 11am, election officials will conduct voter education to explain the procedures and guidelines governing the election.
From about 11am to 11:30am, voters will line up behind their preferred candidates before election officials count the lines and declare the winner.
The elected LC2 chairperson will subsequently nominate members of the parish committee from among the people who constitute the electoral college.
Mucunguzi urged candidates, voters and other participants to maintain peace and comply with electoral laws and guidelines issued by the Electoral Commission.
The LC2 chairperson elections are the last in the category of administrative unit elections being conducted by the Electoral Commission in the 2026 electoral cycle.
“The commission wishes everybody a peaceful, successful, free, fair and credible election today as we elect LC2 chairpersons,” Mucunguzi said.
