Two senior government ministers, Retired Major General Jim Muhwezi Katugugu and Finance Minister Matia Kasaija have announced that the 2026 general elections will mark their final term in active politics.
The long-serving legislators made the declaration on Wednesday after collecting their expression of interest forms from the National Resistance Movement (NRM) Electoral Commission offices in Kampala.
Gen. Jim Muhwezi, the Member of Parliament for Rujumbura Constituency in Rukungiri District, and Hon. Matia Kasaija, who represents Buyanja County in Kibaale District, both confirmed their intentions to seek re-election on the NRM ticket.
However, they emphasized that this would be their last term serving in the legislature.
Having held significant cabinet and parliamentary roles over the years, the two ministers have been towering figures in Uganda’s political landscape for decades.
In a related development, 86-year-old Second Deputy Prime Minister General (Rtd) Moses Ali has also expressed interest in contesting once more for the Adjumani West County seat. Due to his advanced age and health challenges, party officials handed him the nomination forms through the window of his vehicle.
Born in 1939, Gen. Moses Ali remains one of the most senior and enduring figures within both the NRM and Uganda’s broader political history.
