Police in Kampala have arrested 29 National Unity Platform (NUP) supporters accused of blocking roads and disrupting traffic ahead of presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu’s campaign rally in Mityana District on Monday.
According to police spokesperson SP Patrick Onyango, Kyagulanyi, who was scheduled to hold a rally in Mityana on October 6, opted to travel via Hoima Road instead of the designated Mityana Highway.
Onyango said a group of NUP supporters later converged at Bujjuko trading centre along the Mityana highway, where they allegedly drummed, whistled, and blocked the road, sparking traffic disruptions.
“Security personnel issued several warnings, but the group persisted, leading to the arrest of about 29 suspects who are currently detained at Wakiso Police Division,” Onyango stated.
Police have since urged all presidential candidates to adhere to traffic regulations, follow approved route plans, and respect the rights of other road users during campaign activities.
