The Commander of the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) 3 Infantry Division, Brig Gen Michael Walaka Hyeroba, has urged officers undertaking the Platoon Commanders Course Intake 18/26 to uphold discipline, maintain physical fitness and lead by example.

Brig Gen Hyeroba delivered the guidance while assessing the officers during a field exercise codenamed Exercise Storm Karamoja.

“A platoon is where leadership is tested. Your men will look to you when they are tired, hungry and under fire,” he said.

He emphasised the importance of effective leadership at platoon level, noting that junior officers must demonstrate resilience and discipline while guiding their troops through challenging operational situations.

The Division Operations and Training Officer and Exercise Director, Col Santurino Mashereka Tumuranzye, said the exercise was designed to assess the officers’ combat readiness and ability to make sound decisions under pressure.
