The Four-time presidential candidate Dr. Kizza Besigye, along with his aide Obed (Hajj Obeid) Lutale and Captain Denis Oola, has been remanded until May 21, 2025, on terrorism-related charges.

The trio appeared at Nakawa Magistrate’s Court under tight security, where they were again denied bail despite several previous applications.

According to the prosecution, Dr. Besigye, Lutale, Capt. Oola, and other unnamed individuals allegedly conspired to overthrow the Ugandan government by force between 2023 and November 2024.

The alleged plot reportedly involved coordination across several international locations, including Geneva (Switzerland), Athens (Greece), Nairobi (Kenya), and Kampala.

During a tense court session on Wednesday, defence lawyers harshly criticized the conditions of their clients’ detention, calling them unconstitutional and a violation of the principle of presumption of innocence.

“Dr. Besigye and Hajj Lutale are being held in solitary confinement, with no meaningful interaction with other inmates—even at Luzira Prison,” said defence lawyer Erias Lukwago. “This isn’t just confinement it’s isolation.”

The legal team further raised concerns about the intense security presence, which they argued creates an impression of guilt before trial.

“You can see over ten intimidating prison officers surrounding the dock. Outside, their convoy includes a lead car blaring sirens. This spectacle undermines the presumption of innocence,” said lawyer Frederick Mpanga.

Defence counsel also pointed out that the accused have been denied access to their families even within the courtroom. Mpanga noted that one of the accused attempted to speak with their doctor, present in court, but was prevented from doing so.

“We respectfully request that the court allow the accused more humane conditions, including opportunities to speak with their families and legal counsel,” Mpanga added, stressing the importance of upholding pretrial liberties.

The lawyers are also seeking extended visitation hours, as the accused are typically signed out of prison only until 3 p.m.
