The Bishop of Kabale Diocese, Rt. Rev. Bonaventure Bosco Gubazire, has urged institutions of higher learning to equip students with critical thinking skills to foster creativity and innovation and protect them from manipulation and deception by people with ill intentions.
Delivering his homily during the St. Mary’s Day celebrations at St. Mary’s College Rushoroza in Kabale District on Sunday, Bishop Gubazire said it pains him to see young people and even adults being misled by false prophets, preachers, priests and pastors who exploit religion for personal gain.
Bishop Gubazire recounted an encounter with a pastor while he was serving in Ghana, before his appointment as bishop. He said the pastor claimed to possess what he described as miraculous water, which was sold rather than given freely.
He reminded Christians that Mary’s teachings encourage them to ask questions and seek understanding rather than blindly accepting everything they are told.
Bishop Gubazire emphasized that nurturing critical thinking should be a key objective of Church-founded schools across the diocese.
He said a good student is one who is always eager to learn, asks questions and seeks a deeper understanding of issues. He urged students to develop a thirst for knowledge to avoid being misled or manipulated.
Bishop Gubazire also challenged the students to remain humble, astute and responsible while putting God first in their lives.
