Edward Ssebufu, better known as Eddie Mutwe, the chief civilian bodyguard of National Unity Platform (NUP) principal Robert Kyagulanyi, was reportedly abducted on Sunday evening in Mukono by armed men traveling in a “drone” vehicle, according to the Leader of the Opposition in Parliament, Joel Ssenyonyi.

Ssenyonyi condemned the incident, warning that the continuous breakdown of the rule of law in Uganda should alarm all right-thinking citizens.

NUP Secretary General David Lewis Rubongoya described the abduction as a “repeat-mode” tactic reminiscent of the events leading up to the 2021 elections.

“They believe that by arresting and abducting many comrades, they will keep us occupied running around prisons and, more importantly, incapacitate us by targeting valuable members,” Rubongoya said. He urged Ugandans to recognize their duty and responsibility to push back against such criminality.

Muwanga Kivumbi Muhammad, the NUP Deputy President for Central Region and Member of Parliament for Butambala County, also condemned the abduction.

He said it was part of a growing trend of lawlessness and selective witch-hunts against NUP supporters.

“Eddie Mutwe is someone’s father, a friend to many, and a breadwinner to his family. The regime must have some shame and desist from indulging in such barbarism,” Kivumbi stated.
