KAMPALA: The Cabinet of Uganda has established a committee to assist the Ministry of Public Service in investigating accounting officers and government officials involved in paying ghost workers on government payrolls.
This decision followed a report presented by the Ministry of Public Service regarding a special audit of the government payroll. The audit, conducted by the Office of the Auditor General, aimed to verify the number of active civil servants and identify those who are no longer working but continue to receive payments.
The report revealed that some civil servants failed to appear for the verification process yet remain on the payroll, receiving salaries despite no longer being in active service.
According to Dr. Chris Baryomunsi, Minister of Information, Communication Technology, and National Guidance, the committee includes Dr. Monica Musenero Masanza, Minister of Science, Technology, and Innovation, Betty Amongi Akena, Minister of Gender, Labour, and Social Development and David Bahati, Minister of State for Industry.
Minister Baryomunsi stated that the committee will support the Ministry of Public Service in identifying these officials, emphasizing that anyone found guilty will be prosecuted. He also noted that the Director of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) has been alerted to take immediate action upon release of the findings.
