The Parish Priest of Karago Church of Uganda in Kabami Archdeaconry, Diocese of Muhabura, Rev. Harrison Kwizera, has been arrested alongside his brother Herbert Tumushime and Fred Ssindebwa, a self-proclaimed prophet from Rwanda, on allegations of practicing witchcraft and spreading false misfortunes.

The incident occurred on Easter Monday after Rev. Kwizera invited Ssindebwa to their ancestral home in Kanyenka Village, Muramba Parish, Muramba Sub county in Kisoro District. The purpose was to conduct prayers and investigate circumstances surrounding the death of their father, the late Rev. Erasmus John Majambere, who passed away four years ago. The family reportedly sought spiritual insight into the cause of his death.

During the session, Ssindebwa allegedly dug a hole inside the house, claiming it would attract a snake linked to the mystery of Rev. Majambere’s death. He instructed the family not to harm the snake, stating it needed to be handled through spiritual means. However, when a snake did appear, the family killed it, disregarding his warnings.

Following the incident, Emmanuel Nkurunziza, a family member, reported that his 15-year-old daughter began exhibiting signs of spiritual affliction, which he attributed to the so-called snake spirit. Concerned for her wellbeing and disappointed by the lack of support from relatives, Nkurunziza decided to seek legal intervention.
