Police in Kisoro District have exhumed the body of a Congolese national as investigations intensify into allegations that he was assaulted, died in police custody, and was secretly buried in a forest.
The exhumation exercise was conducted on Monday by a team from the Kigezi Region led by Regional CID Officer D/SSP Wathum Benson, accompanied by the regional police surgeon, Scene of Crime Officers (SOCO), and territorial police officers from Kisoro District after obtaining a court order.
According to Kigezi Region Police spokesperson ASP Elly Maate, the team successfully carried out the exercise in line with professional procedures before transporting the body to Kisoro General Hospital for a postmortem examination conducted by the regional police surgeon.
Maate said they had contacted relatives of the deceased in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), who confirmed plans to travel to Kisoro to collect the body for burial back home.
They also conducted a comprehensive scene reconstruction as part of the ongoing investigations aimed at establishing the circumstances surrounding the man’s death.
ASP Maate said the reconstruction exercise was completed successfully and professionally in accordance with the required investigative procedures.
Maate emphasized that inquiries into the matter are still ongoing.
