The ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) has pledged to hold its elected leaders accountable for their campaign promises as the party steps up grassroots mobilisation ahead of the June 24 Kalangala District Woman Member of Parliament by-election.
Speaking during a series of campaign meetings in support of NRM Woman MP candidate Idah Nabayiga on Wednesday, NRM Director of Communication Emmanuel Lumala Dombo said the party would closely monitor the performance of leaders elected on the NRM ticket to ensure they deliver on their commitments to voters.
“As a party, we shall demand accountability from all our elected leaders. We shall conduct regular assessments, and whoever fails to perform as promised will face the consequences,” Dombo said.
Dombo attributed Kalangala District’s economic progress to government programmes championed by President Yoweri Museveni, citing significant gains in the fisheries and oil palm sectors.
He noted that the recovery of fish stocks in the district was a result of government efforts to combat illegal fishing.
“I interacted with some fishermen and asked whether fish stocks had improved. They told me they had. This is a result of President Museveni’s decisive action against illegal fishing,” he said.
Dombo also highlighted the contribution of the oil palm project to household incomes and the local economy, describing it as a key driver of development in the island district.
“The approximately Shs8 billion generated monthly from oil palm cultivation is a result of President Museveni’s guidance. That money circulates within the local economy and benefits communities in many ways,” he added.
His remarks came as senior NRM leaders continued a district-wide mobilisation campaign to rally support for Nabayiga, the party’s flag bearer in the Woman MP race.
The campaign team, led by NRM Vice Chairperson for Buganda Region Haruna Kyeyune Kasolo, included Dombo, Electoral Commission Commissioner Ambassador James Williams Kinobe, and other district leaders.
On Wednesday, the delegation visited several landing sites and held meetings with residents and local leaders in Nakatiba, Mabigo, and Kyagalanyi. They urged voters to support Nabayiga, arguing that her election would strengthen cooperation between the district and the central government and accelerate service delivery and development initiatives.
The mobilisation drive is expected to continue across various islands in Kalangala as the NRM seeks to consolidate support ahead of next week’s poll.
