The Vice President of Democratic Party, Hon. Dr. Fred Mukasa Mbidde has officially declared his intention to contest for the presidency of the Democratic Party, setting the stage for what could become a highly contested race for leadership within Uganda’s oldest political party.
Mbidde formally communicated his decision in a letter dated May 28, 2026, addressed to the party president, Hon. Norbert Mao, who also serves as Uganda’s Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs-designate.
In the letter, Mbidde said he would seek the party’s top position during the upcoming Democratic Party delegates’ conference, signaling the beginning of an internal political process that could shape the party’s future direction.
“In light of this decision, I have begun nationwide consultations with our party members to gather insights, support, and ensure that our collective vision for the future of the Democratic Party is well represented,” Mbidde wrote.
The DP vice president noted that the consultations are aimed at strengthening the party and aligning its goals and strategies with the expectations of members across the country.
He said he is committed to engaging party supporters and leaders on key issues affecting the Democratic Party, emphasizing the importance of inclusivity and open dialogue in charting a new path for the party.
“My intention is to ensure an open dialogue that reflects the interests of all party members,” he added.
Mbidde further expressed optimism about working with the current party leadership as preparations for the delegates’ conference gain momentum, saying he looks forward to guidance and support from Mao and other party stakeholders.
His declaration comes at a crucial moment for the Democratic Party as it seeks to redefine its political identity and strengthen its position ahead of future national political engagements.
The Democratic Party delegates’ conference is expected to attract significant attention, with party members expected to decide on leadership that will steer the party in the coming years.
