KISORO – Concerns are mounting among livestock farmers and veterinary officers in Nyakabande sub-county, Kisoro district, as drug-resistant ticks wreak havoc on their livestock.
The alarming issue was disclosed by Jonath Mbiine, the Assistant Veterinary Officer of Nyakabande sub-county, during a pasture handover event at Bafaso Agro-Tourism mixed farm in Rambura cell, Gasiza parish.
At the event, four dairy farmer groups were provided with pasture, and participants received training on pasture production and management. The aim is to empower farmers to enhance animal nutrition, increase farm yields, and boost profits.
Mbiine highlighted the persistent challenge posed by the Blacklegged Tick and Brown Dog Ticks in Kisoro, causing diseases such as East Coast Fever and Boophilus decoloratus, resulting in fatalities or decreased milk production. The veterinary officer expressed frustration over the difficulty in acquiring genuine acaricides effective against the resistant ticks.
