Fatal Pit Latrine Mishap Claims Life of Rwandan Man in Rubanda

RUBANDA-Tragedy struck in Rubanda district on Thursday when a 50-year-old-man, Munyarwanda by Nationality lost his life in a pit latrine accident.

Habarurema Innocent, the deceased also known as Ifumbira a resident of Kagunga cell in Nyaruhanga Ward, Rubanda Town council, met his untimely demise while at Ntaraga cell digging a pit latrine for Saturday Donato alongside two other individuals identified as Mubangizi Alex and Turyatunga Innocent.

The deceased and other two individuals had been digging a pit latrine for a while and it’s estimated that they had dug up to about 36 feet deep.

on the 29th July 2023, they resumed their digging in the morning as usual, and they came out for lunch at around midday, leaving the tools they were using in the pit they were digging. After they had eaten, the deceased went back to the bottom of the pit to resume work and on reaching the bottom, the deceased started breathing badly saying that he has failed to breathe and that he couldn’t come out of the pit by himself.

His colleagues ran to the center to call for help to pull him out, but by the time they came back, the deceased was quiet and presumed dead.

The deceased had been assisting Saturday Donato, a 26-year-old businessman and reporter, in digging the pit latrine when the unfortunate incident took place at Ntaraga cell in Nyaruhanga parish, Ikumba subcounty.

Elly Maate, the Kigezi region police spokesperson confirmed the incident and said the Scene was visited and documented, Fire and rescue brigade Kigezi region team responded to the scene and the body was retrieved and taken to Kabale referral hospital mortuary for post mortem.
