The government has launched rehabilitation works on a flood-prone section of the 47-kilometer Kerere–Kanungu road in Hamurwa Sub-county, Rubanda East Constituency.

The road, which had become impassable due to recurrent flooding, has significantly disrupted transportation, livelihoods, and local business operations. While on a courtesy visit to Shebeya Parish as part of his ongoing village-to-village mobilization campaign on Monday, Minister of Finance (General Duties), Henry Musasizi acknowledged that the issue has persisted for years.

Minister Musasizi who doubles as the Rubanda East Member of Parliament noted that although the government has previously attempted to rehabilitate the road after every rainy season, runoff from surrounding hills continues to wash away the improvements, rendering the route inaccessible.

Minister Musasizi apologized to residents for the delays in providing a permanent solution. He attributed the setbacks to persistent heavy rains and structural changes within government agencies, particularly the reintegration of the Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) into the Ministry of Works and Transport.

“The flooding has been a long-standing issue, but we are addressing it in phases,” said Minister Musasizi. “In the short term, we are installing stronger culverts and opening drainage channels to ease the water flow.”

He added that the government’s long-term plan includes tarmacking the road up to Kanungu and constructing a permanent bridge to completely eliminate the recurring flooding challenges.
