KASESE: The former Prime Minister of Obusinga Bwa Rwenzururu, Rt. Hon. Gad Mbayahi Bakwanamaha, has defected from the opposition Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) to Uganda’s leading opposition party, the National Unity Platform (NUP).
Joining him in this move are two other prominent members: Alice Mbindule, the NRM Women’s League chair for Bughatha Village in Kilembe Sub-county, and Martha Sanyu, a staunch FDC supporter.
On Saturday, they were officially welcomed into the NUP by the party’s Vice President for the Western Region, Jackline Jolly Tukamushaba. Tukamushaba praised Bakwanamaha and his colleagues for making the bold decision to join NUP and urged them to mobilize for the party.

In his address, Bakwanamaha emphasized that his decision to join NUP was not driven by a desire for personal wealth but rather to use his political experience to guide the party.
Hon. Mbaju Jackson Kathika, the former Member of Parliament for Busongora County South, described Bakwanamaha’s defection as a significant milestone that would help NUP strengthen its position ahead of the 2026 elections.
