NEWS: The Chief of Defense Forces (CDF) of the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF), Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba on Tuesday held high-level discussions with his Algerian counterpart, General Saïd Chanegriha, on military cooperation and strengthening bilateral ties.

Gen. Kainerugaba was welcomed with full military honors at the Algerian military headquarters in Algiers.

He was accompanied by senior UPDF officials, including Maj. Gen. James Birungi, Chief of Defense Intelligence and Security Maj. Gen. Bob Ogiki, Joint Staff Policy and Strategy and Maj. Gen. Keith Katungi, the 5th Division Infantry Commander.

Several senior officials from the Algerian military also attended the meeting.

The discussions centered on areas of mutual interest, particularly the upcoming signing of a comprehensive Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at enhancing cooperation between the UPDF and the Algerian National People’s Army.

This visit is part of Gen. Kainerugaba’s broader efforts to strengthen Uganda’s military ties with countries across Africa and beyond.

Since his appointment, he has engaged with counterparts from various regions to foster collaboration and enhance regional security.

Following their official meeting, General Saïd Chanegriha, who also serves as the Minister Delegate to the Minister of National Defence and Chief of Staff of Algeria’s People’s National Army, hosted a luncheon in Gen. Kainerugaba’s honor at the National Military Club in Algiers.

The event, attended by senior Algerian military leaders, provided an opportunity for informal discussions and highlighted the growing military diplomacy between the two nations.

As part of his visit, Gen. Kainerugaba toured the Algerian Navy and Air Force headquarters.

At the Navy headquarters, he was briefed on the navy’s operational capabilities, which include defending Algeria’s nearly 1,440-kilometer coastline and fulfilling its roles in naval warfare, coast guard operations, and maritime safety.

Similarly, during his visit to the Air Force headquarters, he explored potential areas of collaboration and was informed about the air force’s strategic capabilities.

Gen. Kainerugaba’s visit underscores Uganda’s commitment to fostering regional stability and security through strategic partnerships.

The anticipated MoU between the UPDF and Algeria’s military marks a significant step forward in advancing military cooperation between the two nations.
