The holiday was established in 2001 to remember key events and figures in Uganda’s struggle for freedom.

It specifically commemorates the assassination of Eddidian Babumba Mukiibi Luttamaguzi and the execution of the first NRM/A heroes at Kikandwa, Luweero, in 1981, shortly after NRA rebel leader Yoweri Museveni initiated the war against Milton Obote’s government.

National Heroes Day serves as a solemn reminder of Uganda’s arduous journey toward liberation.

It is a day to honor the courage and sacrifices of those who paved the way for the country’s progress.

The celebrations often include awarding medals to distinguished contributors to Uganda’s development, as well as reflection on the nation’s history and ideals.
