The Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU) has cancelled the Mature Entry Certificate of Kitagwenda District NRM MP flag bearer, Robert Mugabe, after finding that the documents he submitted to qualify for the May 2021 Mature Entry Aptitude Test were fraudulently obtained.
The development comes as Uganda counts down to just 12 days to polling day, marking a decisive step by the university to uphold academic integrity and the credibility of its admission processes.
In a formal communication issued by the Office of the Academic Registrar, IUIU announced the recall and cancellation of Certificate No. IUKC-ME021MAY-139, which had been issued to Mugabe under the Mature Age Entry Scheme.
According to the university, internal investigations established that the documents presented to qualify him for the May 2021 aptitude test were fraudulently acquired.
The matter was deliberated upon by the IUIU Executive Board during its 382nd meeting held on December 31, 2025. Mugabe attended the meeting accompanied by his legal representative, after which the Board resolved to nullify and cancel the certificate in line with Section 7.4 (iii) of the General University Examination Regulations (2023).
As a result of the decision, the university clarified that all rights, privileges and academic benefits arising from the cancelled certificate have been withdrawn with immediate effect.
Mugabe has also been directed to return the original certificate to the Office of the Academic Registrar within 14 days from the date of receipt of the notice. Failure to comply, the university warned, could attract further administrative or legal action.
The decision, signed by Academic Registrar Dr. Adam A. Alli, has been welcomed by observers as a demonstration of IUIU’s commitment to transparency, accountability and strict adherence to academic standards, regardless of an individual’s political standing.
