A total of 123 lawyers have officially joined Uganda’s legal profession after being enrolled as Advocates of the High Court during a ceremony held at the Court of Appeal Building Conference Hall at the Judiciary Headquarters in Kampala.
The enrolment ceremony was on Wednesday presided over by the Chief Registrar, Agnes Alum, marking her first official enrolment ceremony since assuming office.
Addressing the newly enrolled advocates, Alum congratulated them on reaching a major milestone in their legal careers and reminded them that admission to the Bar comes with both privileges and responsibilities.
“You are now free to enjoy not only the privileges and benefits of being an advocate but also the responsibilities that come with the profession,” she said.
The Chief Registrar described the legal profession as an honourable calling that demands public trust, integrity and a strong commitment to justice. She acknowledged concerns about declining standards of professionalism and ethical conduct among some young lawyers and challenged the new advocates to help restore public confidence in the profession.
“I urge you to disprove this perception through your actions,” she said, noting that experienced lawyers also have a responsibility to mentor the next generation of legal practitioners.
Alum reminded the advocates that, as officers of the court, they have a duty not only to represent clients but also to support the administration of justice in line with Article 126(2) of the Constitution.
She encouraged them to remain diligent, continuously improve their legal knowledge, seek mentorship and uphold the highest standards of ethics, honesty and professionalism throughout their careers.
The Chief Registrar also called on the advocates to use their legal skills to expand access to justice through pro bono services and community engagement, saying lawyers have a vital role in addressing societal challenges.
Representing the Secretary to the Law Council, Principal State Attorney Naomi Kyampaire congratulated the advocates and reminded them that admission to the Bar marks the beginning of lifelong professional growth.
She encouraged them to pursue continuous legal education, strengthen their advocacy and communication skills, embrace innovation in legal practice, seek mentorship and develop areas of specialization while striving for excellence in serving both clients and the justice system.
Speaking on behalf of the Vice President of the Uganda Law Society, the Society’s Treasurer Arthur Isiko thanked parents and guardians for supporting the advocates through their legal education.
He reminded the new lawyers that they are custodians of justice and urged them to uphold professional ethics, avoid shortcuts, embrace lifelong learning and build careers founded on integrity, humility and public service.
Moderating the ceremony, Fidelis Otawo emphasized that signing the Roll of Advocates is more than a procedural requirement.
“Signing the Roll is not a mere formality; it is a solemn covenant,” he said, urging the new advocates to honour the oath they had taken and serve the legal profession with dedication and integrity.
